In addition to attending their own classes and participating in spring practices, nine members of the Iowa football program will take time today to serve as mentors and reading tutors at two Iowa City elementary schools.
As part of a three-year-old partnership between the Iowa football program, City of Literature USA and the Grant Wood and Mark Twain elementary schools, Hawkeye players will visit third- through sixth-grade classrooms today to discuss the importance of reading as a college student and as college athletes.
In upcoming weeks, working with reading specialists and classroom instructors at the schools, the players will return to meet one-on-one to tutor elementary students in reading.
The program runs through May 2 and participants at Grant Wood include James Ferentz, Shane DiBona, Jim Poggi and John Wienke, while Hawkeyes Steve Bigach, Casey Kreiter, Brett Van Sloten, Greg Castillo and Brian Kroll will work with students at Mark Twain school.
