The artist’s touch

The traveling trophy that Iowa will take with it to Nebraska isn’t the only unfinished piece of artwork the Hawkeye football team will be playing for this season.
Iowa director of athletics Gary Barta said the new trophy that Iowa and Iowa State will play for on the football field also remains a work in progress as the teams begin to work toward their Sept. 10 game at Jack Trice Stadium.
“We have a concept and it’s well on its way to being completed, but no, it’s not done yet either,” Barta said at the recent Big Ten kickoff in Chicago. “It’s being finalized.”
Iowa Corn, which is now the title sponsor of the year-long Cy-Hawk series, is involved with the formulation of the new trophy.
“We feel like we have the perfect sponsor for that and we’re excited about the new trophy,” Barta said. “It will be something fresh. The one it replaces is not a trophy that has been around for 200 years or anything. It was time for a makeover.”
The new trophy will replace the soon-to-be-retired Cy-Hawk Trophy that has been used since 1977. Barta said the old trophy will likely be displayed somewhere in the state once it is retired.
Barta expects the trophy for The Heroes Game to be unveiled at some point in November, most likely early in the week of the first game between the Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers as Big Ten rivals.
